Dr. Ami P. Vaidya is a double board-certified Gynecologic Oncologist and serves as the Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Her surgical practice is dedicated to providing the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments for gynecologic cancers, including endometrial, ovarian, cervical, and vulvar cancers. Dr. Vaidya earned her medical degree from Columbia University, completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University, and pursued her advanced fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the renowned Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University.

1. What is a Gynecologic Oncologist? A gynecologic oncologist is a cancer surgeon who specializes only in cancers of the female reproductive system, like the ovaries, uterus (endometrial), and cervix.

2. What are the benefits of robotic surgery for gynecologic cancer? It's a type of "keyhole" surgery where I use a console to control robotic arms. This lets me be very precise through tiny cuts. For patients, this usually means less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a much faster recovery.

3. What is sentinel lymph node mapping? This is a special technique we use during cancer surgery. Instead of removing a lot of lymph nodes, we find and remove only the first few "sentinel" nodes that cancer would travel to. This helps us check for spread while lowering the risk of side effects like lymphedema (swelling).

4. What is fertility-sparing surgery? For some women with early-stage gynecologic cancers, it's a way to treat the cancer while preserving the uterus and/or ovaries. This special surgery gives women the chance to still have children in the future.
