Brian Amorello, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in both New York and New Jersey and practices within the Department of Neurology at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey. He also holds a faculty position as assistant professor of Neurology at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.
Dr. Amorello cares for the mental health challenges often experienced with a chronic illness, such as depression, anger, stress and anxiety. He works collaboratively with patients and their physicians to manage the day-to-day physical and psychological symptoms often associated with neurological illnesses such as migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, concussion and ALS.
Dr. Amorello is a firm believer that to effectively treat an individual, you must look at the whole person. He helps patients identify the tools and strategies needed to make choices that have a positive impact on both their mental and physical health. Using cognitive behavioral therapy, Dr. Amorello helps patients understand how their thinking and behaviors impact their medical diagnoses. He counsels patients to help them improve health behaviors, partner relations and work stress, identify techniques to cope with symptoms as well as respond to emotional challenges in a more effective way.
Philosophy of Care
Dr. Amorello approaches his work through a multicultural lens. He recognizes that areas of a person’s identity play a critical role in both their mental and physical health. Dr. Amorello considers how a person’s racial/ethnic background, religion, gender, and sexual orientation impact the presenting issues that encourage them to attend psychological counseling. He believes that these areas of a person tend to intersect and inform how one lives each day, including their approach to disease modification. Dr. Amorello understands how critical a person’s identity can be within their medical care, and how it can influence the way one adjusts to a disease, follows through with their doctor’s recommendations, and seeks support around their medical concerns. Dr. Amorello helps patients understand how these marginalized identities influence not only their mental health, but physical health as well in a safe and respected environment. He is aware of the challenges and difficulties minority groups face when seeking healthcare, and relies on creating an environment within a medical setting for his patients to feel heard and well-cared for.
