Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common allergy symptoms in children?
Allergies in children include respiratory signs like coughing, sneezing, and nasal congestion, as well as itchy, watery eyes. Other common reactions are skin-related, such as rashes, or gastrointestinal, such as an upset stomach after consuming certain foods. More severe reactions, such as swelling or difficulty breathing, can also occur and warrant immediate medical intervention. For any recurring symptoms, it’s best to consult a pediatric allergist.
How is a child tested for drug allergies?
Figuring out if a child has a drug allergy can be complicated, but our skilled team knows how to manage these situations. We provide thorough drug allergy testing, which can include skin tests, patch tests, or even having your child take a small amount of the drug in a safe, controlled setting (drug challenge) to see if there is a reaction.
If a child must take a medication they are allergic to, we can use a process called drug desensitization. This allows them to get the treatment they need while we carefully manage and reduce the chance of an allergic reaction.
What is the approach to treating children with immune system disorders?
When a child's immune system is not working as it should, it can cause them to get sick often and lead to other significant health problems. Our immunology experts provide comprehensive care for children with various immune disorders, including those affecting antibodies or multiple components of the immune system.
In some instances, advanced treatments such as a bone marrow transplant or gene therapy may be required. We work together with other pediatric specialists to make sure your child gets the most complete care possible, including these specialized therapies.
Do you treat Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES)?
Yes, we provide comprehensive diagnosis and management for children with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES). Our approach involves a multidisciplinary team, often including pediatric allergists, gastroenterologists, nutrition specialists, and speech specialists, to ensure your child receives expert, coordinated care. For more information about FPIES treatment, please visit the Pediatric Allergy and Immunology page.
When should I take my child to see a pediatric allergist or immunologist?*
A consultation with a specialist is warranted for children who experience recurrent or severe allergic events, poorly controlled asthma, or repeated infections. Furthermore, any ongoing symptoms that negatively impact a child's quality of life should be evaluated by an expert. Pediatric allergists and immunologists are physicians with advanced training in the diagnosis and management of these complex medical issues.
Can I book an appointment online?
Yes. In most cases, you can book an appointment online with our providers. Check the Meet the team section below to see which providers offer online scheduling and which ones require a phone call.
Philosophy of Care
I enjoy listening and spending time with my patients. I am thoughtful and will be their biggest advocate. I spend the time to address every concern and will work my best to find a solution to any of my patients’ ailments.
My role as a pediatric allergist/immunologist is to identify either a specific sensitization to an allergen (whether it be pollen, food, etc) or issue with the immune system (e.g. lack of adequate antibodies). From there, my primary goal is to empower my patient and their family to understand any discussed diagnosis or condition.
My biggest passion is spending time with my patients and their family until all parties are accepting, comfortable and ready with next steps to take. Once this is achieved, I work with families on how to create an allergy-free environment, and offer therapy suggestions with frequent patient input.
