James C Sherer, MD

James Sherer, M.D., is an addiction psychiatrist, educator, author and patient advocate. He is a board certified general psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist with a special interest in mood and anxiety disorders, relationships, ADHD, behavioral addictions, and substance use disorders.
Dr. Sherer was appointed Interim Chief Medical Officer at Hackensack Meridian Carrier Clinic in August 2025. He previously served as Deputy Chief Medical Officer, where he played an instrumental role in advancing clinical excellence, supporting integrated care initiatives and championing the wellbeing of patients.
Dr. Sherer completed medical school and psychiatric residency training at Rutgers University Medical School, and completed an addiction psychiatry fellowship at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Sherer previously served as Director of the Addiction Medicine Consult Service and Associate Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He also is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. He most recently was employed as Medical Director, Addiction Psychiatry, at Overlook Medical Center, and also owns a private, outpatient psychiatric practice.
Dr. Sherer serves as a content expert on technology and addiction for the New Jersey Psychiatric Association. He was nominated to serve on the American Psychiatric Association’s Working Group on Confronting Addiction: Prevention to Recovery. He has edited several textbooks and authored many textbook chapters on mental health.
