Martin E. Gutierrez, MD is Professor of Medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and serves as Director of the Phase I/Experimental Therapeutics Program and Chief of Thoracic Oncology at Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center. He is an internationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in thoracic malignancies, early-phase clinical trials, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and precision oncology.


Dr. Gutierrez has dedicated his career to accelerating the development of novel cancer therapies through innovative clinical research. He is a recognized leader in national and international early drug development and has served as principal investigator on numerous first-in-human and first-in-class clinical trials. His work has contributed to the clinical development and regulatory approval of multiple anticancer therapies, bringing promising new treatments to patients worldwide. Under his leadership, the Phase I Program at John Theurer Cancer Center has become one of the largest and most active early-phase oncology programs in the New York–New Jersey region and a destination for innovative cancer clinical trials.


Before joining Hackensack Meridian Health, Dr. Gutierrez held leadership positions at the National Cancer Institute, where he led thoracic oncology clinical research and served as Associate Director of the Medical Oncology Fellowship Program. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and over 100 scientific abstracts presented at leading international meetings. His work has been cited more than 12,000 times, reflecting his significant contributions to the advancement of cancer therapeutics.
