Richard M Winters, MD

Richard Winters, M.D. is a board certified and fellowship trained plastic surgeon who currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. He has extensive experience and focused expertise treating complex primary and secondary surgical problems.

Dr. Winters was among the first to utilize a new robotic microsurgery platform, the Symani Surgical System, at Hackensack University Medical Center in August 2025. The medical center is the first hospital in New Jersey to utilize this revolutionary new robotic microsurgery platform. This sophisticated system acts as an extension of the surgeon’s own hands, where the surgeon sits at a comfortable console and their hand movements are translated by the robot’s arms into perfectly steady, tremor-free motions even at a submillimeter level. This allows our surgeons to stitch with sutures thinner than a hair, achieving a level of accuracy that pushes beyond the limits of the human hand. Dr. Winters notes that this new technology elevates the level of precision and stability, with benefits such as smaller incisions, less scarring, and less pain, which translates directly to better results and faster, more successful recoveries for patients.

Dr. Winters is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and maintains active memberships in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and others. He has been recognized by numerous professional and consumer organizations for his quality of work and is the recipient of many surgical and educational awards. These awards include Castle Connelly, New York Magazine, New Jersey Monthly as chosen by N.J. Physicians, New Jersey Monthly as chosen by NJ Nurses, Vitals/Patients’ Choice and others.
