Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is bariatric surgery? It's surgery to help people with obesity lose weight. There are several procedures which work by either making the stomach smaller, which helps patients feel full faster with smaller portions or bypass a part of the small intestine to create malobsorption or both. These procedures have been proven effective in improving or resolving health problems like Type II Diabetes, Hypertension, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Fatty Liver, and Osteoarthritis.
2. What is medical weight management? It's a non-surgical approach to weight loss. We use proven strategies, including newer medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as Wegovy® or Mounjaro®), combined with lifestyle changes to help patients lose weight safely.
3. What is an Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)? ESG is a non-surgical weight loss procedure. An endoscope (a flexible tube with a camera) is passed through the mouth to place sutures inside the stomach, making it smaller. There are no incisions on the abdomen, and recovery is very fast.
4. I have a hernia. Does it need to be repaired? Yes, most hernias need surgery because they don't resolve and may get larger and more symptomatic. An elective repair is recommended in most cases to prevent incarceration and/or strangulation (a serious problem where tissue or organs get trapped within the hernia). I routinely use robotic surgery to make the repair more precise and facilitate faster recovery.
5. What is revisional bariatric surgery? Revisional procedures are offered to patients who have had a bariatric procedure in the past and have either not lost enough weight or have regained some or all of the weight.
6. How can I schedule an appointment with Dr. Terushkin?
