Sonia Lander, DNP, CNM, MSN, is a doctorally prepared, certified nurse midwife with over 23 years of experience in clinical practice. With a true passion for improving maternity care, she is dedicated to being your kind and knowledgeable partner in your healthcare journey. 

Sonia firmly believes in midwifery care to improve maternal newborn outcomes She has served many diverse patient populations, speaks five different languages, and genuinely enjoys making communities healthier by keeping women healthy. 

Her philosophy on care is to always use evidence based care and a collaborative multidisciplinary approach when necessary. She also believes that health starts with the best patient choices for your well being. 

Sonia is an active member of the American Nurses Association and the American College of Nurse MIdwives. In her free time, she loves to cook, run, travel to different countries to ski/snowboard, and spend time with her family and friends.

“Beyond medical checks, how do you help prepare me for the physical and emotional experience of labor?”

Sonia views preparation as a partnership that is built throughout the pregnancy. Beyond routine medical checks, she engages in ongoing conversations to prepare the patient for the physical and emotional realities of labor. She always discusses hopes and fears, and how to understand the signs and stages of labor. The ultimate goal is for the patient to enter their birth experience feeling confident, knowledgeable, and empowered, with a deep trust in their body's ability.

“How do you help create a calm and supportive environment for birth, whether it's in a hospital or a birth center?”

Sonia acts as the guardian of the patient's birth space. Believing a calm environment is crucial, she works to create that feeling regardless of the location. She discusses preferences with the patient beforehand—such as lighting, music, or the number of people present—and then works to make that a reality. In a hospital, she serves as the patient's advocate, helping to manage the flow of people in the room and ensuring the entire care team respects the desire for a peaceful atmosphere. Her goal is to create a protected, intimate space where the patient feels safe, respected, and free to focus on their labor.

“How do you support my chosen birth plan, and when would you recommend we deviate from it?”

Sonia views a birth plan as a valuable communication tool that helps her understand the patient's goals and values. Her primary role is to help the patient achieve the birth they envision while always prioritizing the safety of both parent and baby. The plan is followed as closely as possible. If a situation arises where a deviation might be medically necessary, Sonia will involve shared decision making.  She will clearly explain what she is observing, why she is suggesting a change, what all the options are, and the benefits and risks of each. This process of shared decision-making ensures the patient remains an active partner in their care.
