Stephen M. Bloomfield, M.D., is a neurosurgeon with more than 30 years of experience. A stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon, Dr. Bloomfield treats a range of neurological conditions, including Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, brain tumors, trigeminal neuralgia and other forms of facial pain. He works closely with a group of physicians, psychologists, therapists and nurses, providing holistic treatment of patients in a humane and respectful setting with the goal to improve function and quality of life.

Dr. Bloomfield has been a principal investigator in many multi-university investigations of cutting-edge technology for the treatment of patients with malignant brain tumors and chronic pain syndromes. He employs noninvasive stereotactic radiosurgery, a nonsurgical radiation therapy, to treat tumors and functional abnormalities in the brain and spine. He also specializes in deep brain stimulation, a neurosurgical procedure to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia and other movement disorder conditions.

Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Bloomfield earned graduate degrees in Psychobiology and Biomedical Engineering. He then completed medical school and his neurology residency at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, along with a neurosurgical residency at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

His fellowship training includes studying neurochemical evaluation of seizure disorders with the National Institute of Health, an evaluation and neurosurgical treatment of intractable epilepsy at UCLA, and stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, neuro-oncology at the University of California-Irvine. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

As part of the multidisciplinary team at the Brain and Spine Tumor Program at JFK University Medical Center, Dr. Bloomfield works alongside neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, medical neuro-oncologists, neuro-pathologists, and neuro-radiologists utilizing innovative new treatments to provide comprehensive patient and family-centered care.

The Spine Care Program at JFK University Medical Center treats all aspects of spinal cord injury and related complications. Here, Dr. Bloomfield joins a team of spine specialists collaborating with neurosurgeons, pain medicine physicians, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists and radiologists to determine the most appropriate plan of care for patients and their families.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Bloomfield views patients as family, treating each with the same care and compassion he would want his own family to receive. The hallmark of that is to listen and communicate in as clear a manner as possible to help each patient understand not only their condition, but also the treatment options available to them.
