Taaran Cariappa Ballachanda Subbaiah, MD

Dr. Taaran Ballachanda is a board-certified and fellowship-trained specialist in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center. He is dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care for a wide range of complex lung diseases and critical illnesses.
Dr. Ballachanda earned his Master’s Degree in Medicine from the Medical University Pleven in Bulgaria and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Creighton University School of Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona.
Following his residency, Dr. Ballachanda pursued a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, training at leading institutions including University Hospital Newark and Hackensack University Medical Center.
Dr. Ballachanda holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also has specialized training as an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Specialist from Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.
Currently, he serves as a full-time Attending Physician at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he provides both inpatient and outpatient pulmonary consultations and works as a critical care intensivist.
In recognition of his expertise, he was appointed the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) in 2024. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, where he is actively involved in teaching students, residents and fellows.
Dr. Ballachanda's major research interests include pulmonary embolism, cardiopulmonary physiology, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). He has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and presentations at national and international conferences.
His commitment to patient care extends beyond the hospital through his involvement in various committees, including the Cardiac Arrest Committee and the Shock Committee at HUMC. He is an active member of several professional societies, such as the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Thoracic Society.
