Christopher Bargoud, M.D.,  is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in robotic, bariatric, and minimally invasive surgery. He cares for patients with a wide range of surgical conditions, prioritizing advanced techniques that result in smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster return to daily life.

After completing his fellowship in Chicago, Dr. Bargoud returned to New Jersey, his home state, to use his expertise and care for the community. He takes a personalized approach to medicine, believing the best surgical care combines technical expertise with genuine compassion. He has a particular passion for all types of hernia repairs, including inguinal, umbilical, ventral, incisional, epigastric, Spigelian, obturator, and parastomal hernias. He also has an interest in weight loss, helping patients achieve meaningful, long-term health improvements through either medical weight management or bariatric surgery.

Above all, Dr. Bargoud views surgery as a partnership. He works closely with you to understand your unique goals and determine the best approach for your needs, ensuring you leave every visit feeling confident in the treatment plan you have created together.

His training began at Rutgers University where he completed his undergraduate studies (Biomedical Engineering, Summa Cum Laude), medical school, and his general surgery residency. He then completed his fellowship at the Chicago Institute of Advanced Surgery where, working alongside internationally recognized surgeons, he refined skills in bariatric, foregut, hernias, abdominal wall reconstruction, and revisional bariatric surgery. He has over 10 peer-reviewed journal publications, some of which as first author, over 20 abstracts/presentations, and one book chapter.

Outside of work, Dr. Bargoud enjoys working out at the gym, golfing, playing soccer, and spending time with his wife and dog.

FAQ:

“Do I need surgery to lose weight?”

Not all patients need surgery for weight loss. However, some may. Dr. Bargoud will have detailed conversations with you regarding lifestyle, diet, and goals to provide options of the best treatment plan.

“What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery? Does the robot do anything on its own in the operation?”

Minimally invasive surgery allows the surgeon to complete the same operations through tiny cuts instead of a large one leading to less pain, smaller scars, and a much faster recovery. Sometimes the robot is used to perform this operation in a minimally invasive fashion. The robot does not do anything on its own during the operation. It is simply a tool that allows Dr. Bargoud to have more dexterity for complex procedures.

“What are the benefits of bariatric surgery?”

Bariatric (weight-loss) surgery is one of the most effective and lasting treatments for severe obesity. Beyond significant, long-term weight loss, surgery can improve or even resolve conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, and sleep apnea. Many patients also experience improved energy, mobility, and quality of life. Studies also show that bariatric surgery can help people live longer, healthier lives.
