A practicing neurologist since 1987, Dr. Florian Thomas has subspecialty training and experience in spinal cord medicine, neuromuscular disorders, neurogenetics, and neuroimmunology. He is board-certified in neurology, spinal cord medicine, and neural repair and rehabilitation. He treats adults and children with ALS, MS, neuromyelitis optica, peripheral neuropathies, Charcot-Marie-Tooth hereditary neuropathies, and chronic spinal cord injury.

As Chair of Neurology and Neurosciences at Hackensack University Medical Center and Medical Director, Northern Region, Neuroscience Care Transformation Service for Hackensack Meridian Health, Dr. Thomas has been instrumental in the development of multiple neuroscience programs at the institute. He is Director of the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Center of Excellence and the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association Center of Excellence, Co-Director of the Center for Memory Loss & Brain Health and the ALS Center, and Interim Medical Director for Stroke Rehabilitation. He is Professor and Founding Chair of Neurology, and Associate Dean for Faculty Advancement, at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

Dr. Thomas is dedicated to working as part of a team to provide patient-centered, comprehensive care that addresses patients’ physical and emotional needs. He strives to foster patients’ self-advocacy, resilience, engagement in one’s care, and optimal health behavior. He encourages his patients to eat a healthy diet and stay active mentally, socially, and physically.

He works closely with the National MS Society, the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, tALS United and ALS Association, the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation. He also participates in multiple clinical trials on MS and stroke and spinal cord injury and has received grant funding from public and private sources. His efforts on behalf of people with MS were recognized with a congressional proclamation and the National MS Society Pathlighter Award.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Thomas strives to understand the impact of the totality of his patients' symptoms and signs on their quality of life and daily function in their personal, social, and work lives. With that knowledge, he tries to connect with his patients to provide comprehensive solutions that will allow them to function as best as they can despite an illness. He treats his patients as peers who have agency and know themselves better than he can ever know them — recognizing that he may only have some answers, while others come from rehabilitation specialists, psychologists, and colleagues in other specialties that are relevant to the conditions he treats, such as ophthalmology, urology, sleep medicine, physiatry, rheumatology, and geriatrics, to name a few. He recognizes that disparities exist when it comes to access to care and an environment conducive to health, as well as affordability of treatments — with some disparities based on ethnic background, sexual orientation, and gender identity. He wants his patients to know that the Neuroscience Institute welcomes every person as an individual and wants them to feel safe in the institute’s care.
